The VISN–AUS Construction Studies course is designed to build practical, workforce-ready knowledge through strong collaboration with our trusted partners. Instruction will be delivered by experienced professionals from local universities, colleges, and skilled trades organizations, ensuring participants receive both academic insight and real-world application. By leveraging regional educational institutions and industry experts as instructors, the course provides relevant, up-to-date training aligned with current construction standards, VA requirements, and local market conditions.
This collaborative instructional model is structured to produce measurable improvements in construction planning, execution, and oversight across the VISN–AUS region. By learning directly from active industry professionals, participants will increase proficiency in cost estimation, schedule management, contract compliance, and risk mitigation. Program outcomes will be tracked through course completion rates, competency assessments, and applied project exercises designed to demonstrate readiness for real-world VA construction environments.
The VISN–AUS Construction Studies program supports workforce sustainability and operational efficiency by developing a pipeline of qualified professionals aligned with VA construction standards. Success will be measured through improved project delivery metrics, including reduced schedule delays, minimized change orders, and enhanced compliance with safety and quality requirements. By leveraging local universities, colleges, and trade experts, the program delivers scalable training that strengthens regional capacity, improves performance consistency, and directly supports VISN and VA capital program objectives.

Construction field personnel and office employees can increase their efficiency and reduce avoidable errors by being able to thoroughly read and understand construction blueprints and drawings. Students taking this course will learn to more effectively read and understand construction blueprints. Students will learn where to look, how to visualize what a drawing is showing, where to find other views—such as sections and details—and ways to speed up comprehension.

This course will cover all the tasks required to develop an accurate sitework estimate. Students learn to calculate work quantities from engineering drawings, correctly adjust for material swell and shrink, assemble efficient crews, and determine productivity.
Students will learn to better understand the methods by which sitework construction cost estimates are developed. This course is designed for new estimators, more experienced estimators who have never been exposed to formal training, and other construction professionals.

Students will learn to accurately estimate concrete costs. Using a real set of drawings, students will perform a complete concrete takeoff and will apply material and labor costs to that takeoff to assemble a complete estimate. Students will leave this class with the knowledge needed to produce accurate concrete estimates using efficient and reliable estimating techniques.

Students will learn to accurately estimate earthwork construction costs. Using a real set of drawings, students will complete a variety of earthwork take-offs and will apply labor and material costs to each take-off. Students will gain the knowledge and skills needed to produce accurate earthwork estimates using efficient and reliable estimating techniques.

Students will receive personalized instruction on how to properly achieve accurate takeoffs for all types of underground utility projects. Using real sets of drawings, students will perform complete takeoffs and will apply material and labor costs to assemble a complete estimate. The training provides the necessary skill sets and knowledge-based processes for consistent underground utility estimating. This course is for new estimators, field personnel and all other construction professionals who want to acquire a sound fundamental understanding of the principles of underground utility construction cost estimates. The course is designed to improve costing, pricing and production techniques of underground utility contractors on private and government projects.
